Lung expansion therapy involves a variety of modalities designed to
increase lung volume, and has become a very important component of comprehensive
respiratory care.
IPPB was originally applied to patients without much attention to careful
planning, implementation, or follow-up. Eventually, this modality was
nearly abandoned, with little consideration for the possible benefits
of its use with carefully chosen patients. Over time, other approaches
to lung expansion therapy have developed, including incentive spirometry,
intermittent CPAP, and PEP therapy. A more scientific approach to their
use, and continuing investigation into the safety and efficacy of these
modalities is providing the basis for rational delivery of lung expansion
therapy. RCPs play an important role in all aspects of lung expansion
therapy.
