Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this module, you will be able to:
- Analyze and articulate contemporary definitions of sleep, incorporating behavioral, physiological, neurological, and molecular perspectives
- Describe the neuroanatomical structures, neurotransmitter systems, and cellular mechanisms that regulate sleep-wake states
- Explain the physiological changes occurring across organ systems during different sleep stages
- Compare and evaluate various methodologies for measuring brain activity during sleep, including polysomnography, neuroimaging, and emerging technologies
- Examine sleep from an evolutionary perspective, analyzing phylogenetic patterns and comparative sleep architecture across species
- Synthesize knowledge of age-related changes in sleep architecture and regulation from infancy through senescence
- Apply current theories of sleep function, including synaptic homeostasis, metabolic regulation, and memory consolidation, to clinical practice
