Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this module, you will be able to:
- Explain the physiologic basis of oxygenation and the pathophysiology of hypoxemia that justifies supplemental oxygen and distinguish hypoxemia from hypoxia and from dyspnea.
- Describe the essential clinical elements of home oxygen therapy, including patient assessment, qualification testing, prescription of flow and duration, titration, and follow-up.
- Identify and discuss the indications and clinical uses for home oxygen therapy across the spectrum of cardiopulmonary and other disorders, including continuous, nocturnal, ambulatory, and palliative oxygen.
- Discuss the role of long-term oxygen therapy in the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including the landmark survival trials and current guideline recommendations for resting, exertional, and nocturnal hypoxemia.
- Compare the principal home oxygen delivery systems and patient interfaces, and match each to a patient's clinical needs, mobility, and flow requirements.
- Apply the principles of home oxygen safety, patient and caregiver education, and adherence to reduce risk and improve outcomes.
- Explain the reimbursement framework for home oxygen under Medicare and identify and explain the key compliance concerns of the Office of Inspector General.
