Upon successful completion of this module, you will be able to:
- Identify the major chronic respiratory diseases—asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), and pulmonary hypertension—and describe their epidemiological burden worldwide.
- Explain the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying each of the major chronic respiratory diseases.
- Recognize the principal risk factors for chronic respiratory disease, including tobacco smoke, indoor and outdoor air pollutants, allergens, occupational exposures, nutritional factors, and post-infectious sequelae.
- Describe disparities in exposure and disease burden between high-income and low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs).
- Outline the Global Alliance against Chronic Respiratory Diseases (GARD) stepwise framework for action, including burden estimation, risk factor identification, and surveillance strategies.
- Discuss evidence-based strategies for advocacy, prevention, and health promotion related to chronic respiratory diseases.
- Apply principles for improving diagnosis and increasing drug accessibility for chronic respiratory diseases and respiratory allergies, including in resource-limited settings.
- Distinguish the unique features of pediatric chronic respiratory diseases and respiratory allergies, including early-life determinants and age-appropriate management approaches.
- Evaluate policy implementation steps necessary to reduce the global burden of chronic respiratory diseases.
