- Explain the mechanisms of influenza transmission and apply this knowledge to patient care and infection control decisions.
- Apply current CDC and HICPAC guidelines for Standard, Droplet, and Airborne Precautions when caring for patients with confirmed or suspected influenza.
- Select and properly use personal protective equipment (PPE), including surgical masks and NIOSH-approved respirators, according to current evidence-based recommendations.

- Describe the respiratory therapist's role in aerosol-generating procedures and explain the heightened infection control measures required during these interventions.
- Summarize lessons learned from historical influenza pandemics and apply them to contemporary pandemic preparedness.
- Identify emerging influenza threats, including novel avian influenza A viruses (H5N1), and describe the current infection control framework for these pathogens.
